Cal-COBRA

California offers their own version of COBRA, Cal-COBRA, in addition to the federal-level COBRA. At the federal level, COBRA coverage is available for 18 or 36 months depending on your circumstances. 18 months is the usual duration, but if you have a disabled dependent or experience another qualifying event during the 18 month period, you may be able to extend coverage for an additional 18 months. Under Cal-COBRA, people who received 18 months of coverage under federal COBRA are eligible for an additional 18 months under Cal-COBRA.

Eligibility Guidelines

You must have a W-2 and any of the following:

• You have fully or partially unemployed employment status, affected by COVID-19

• You or your family is affected by school closures of a child

• Your previous unemployment claim has expired
