What is the Affordable Care Act?
The Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare, was signed into law in 2010. The main goals of the ACA were to provide accessible healthcare to all Americans (via expanding Medicaid eligibility, and expanding financial assistance), to protect those with preexisting conditions, and to innovate within healthcare delivery. So far, millions of Americans with and without pre-existing conditions have benefited from the ACA.
Additionally, under the ACA’s individual mandate, uninsured individuals were required to pay an annual fee, further encouraging people to acquire healthcare. However, under the Trump administration, this individual mandate was repealed and has not been since reinstated.
